2009 Education & Events

MSCO introduced its first Tumor Board program in 2004.  Due to its success, the Society continues this effort each year by focusing on a different disease.  These programs are designed to enhance the education for oncology professionals by presenting difficult and/or interesting cases of various cancers for discussion by an expert panel and peers to better learn how to evaluate, manage, and treat challenging cases.  At the completion of these programs, participants are able to:

  • Develop strategies to better detect and analyze difficult and/or interesting cancer tumors
  • Distinguish the management components of various treatment options
  • Assess and apply treatment options for challenging cancer tumors

Tumor Boards are targeted toward clinicians, researchers, academicians, community practitioners, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgical oncologists, nurse/nurse practitioners, PAs, and fellows.

Mentor Program
In 2006, MSCO piloted its first Mentor Program.  This program is specifically organized to meet the needs of Massachusetts fellows to address career options in academic practice, private practice, basic research, and industry.  A panel of four representatives covering each discipline presented a glimpse into each of their professional lives.

Due to the success of the Mentor Program, MSCO continued its effort.  MSCO’s needs were met with ASCO State Affiliate Grant in 2007 to aid in the development of the program.  Attendees from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire joined the 2007 event to network with practicing oncologists/hematologists.

MSCO continued this program in 2008 at the Best of ASCO, Eastern Conference on June 27, 2008, Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel, Boston MA.
